We are continuing our upcycling journey with knits! Not stretchy knit fabrics, but knitted wear made with yarn like that which comes from winter scarves, sweaters/cardigans, mittens, etc.
If you don't have any of the types of fabrics suggested, asking family and friends, or your local buy nothing facebook group, is a great way to source fabrics. Each month, we'll also ask you to bring your extras to share for upcoming blocks! Find out what materials we will use next on the main block lotto page.
Due: Our next in-person event, in November.
Techniques and concepts: Upcycling, interfacing

What you'll need
- Knit wear
- Rotary cutter
- All the sewing things
- Curiosity, and a sense of adventure!
Block size: 9 inches square
Steps
- Select the area of the knit that you would like to use and iron some interfacing to the back. Be careful, as some yarn is made on synthetic fabrics, these might melt under high heat. Using a pressing cloth (non melting fabric) over the knit and interfacing is recommended to avoid ruining the knit and having sticky residue on your iron.

- Cut out your knit in a square or rectangle of 8 inches or less, then add a border in a neutral coloured quilting cotton that coordinates with your knit and that will bring the size of the square to 9 inches. Leaving a little extra fabric so that the blocks can be squared by the winner is always appreciated! We are adding a border in order to make assembling blocks of different thicknesses a little easier and to help pull the multiple colours used together.
Enjoy making as many blocks as you wish and good luck in the next block lotto!
