January Block of the Month

This is the block that we'll do for the February meeting.  The size is only 6" this time - so feel free to make more than one :)  You'll get one ticket into the draw for each block 6" block you submit.

I picked this block after seeing this photo, of a Riley Blake design. I loved it - very striking but so simple.

Speed Date with Improv - Workshop with Krista Hennebury

Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild is excited to announce an upcoming workshop with Krista Hennebury!

Krista blogs at Poppyprint Creates and her book Make It, Take It was published by Martingale in January 2015. Krista has long been a popular teacher within VMQG and other guilds in the lower mainland, but in the last few years quilters outside of the area have been able to learn from her as well, as she traveled to Alaska, Inuvik (NWT) and Sweden (and more!) to teach.

This workshop is especially exciting because it’s brand new.  Read below for a description of the workshop, and how to sign up!

Speed Date with Improv is a face-paced one day workshop for the improv-curious quilter who’s ready to let go and work without stressing, obsessing or second guessing!

In the morning we’ll work our way through several fun improv piecing techniques; Krista will demo each technique, then you’ll return to your cutting mat and machine to try it out for yourself before the bell rings for your next improv demo-date. Later in the afternoon, we’ll play on the design wall, searching for serendipitous intersections of line and shape in a final layout. You’ll learn how to jigsaw your piecing together into a pleasing abstract composition that will serve as a mini-improv sampler reference for future work.

Students are encouraged to work with solids and limit their fabric palette to black, white plus one colour for high contrast visual impact and definition of line and shape. Discussion will also cover the work of improv master quilters and recommended resources for further exploration of technique.

Cost: $55 for members, $60 for non-members

Sign ups are open to members at this time, the class will be open for non-members after our May meeting (if spaces are still available)

CQA Show

The Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild has been invited by CQA to represent modern quilting at this year's show.  Quilts submitted to this special exhibit will be juried by the OMQG, not CQA.  If you would like your quilts to be juried by CQA and eligible for CQA awards, you must submit through CQA.  You may enter your quilts into BOTH the CQA show and the OMQG's special exhibit, but only quilts submitted and accepted through CQA will be eligible for their prizes.  OMQG quilts will be displayed in a separate area

OMQG and VMQG Swap

We are so excited to announce a mini-mini quilt swap with Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild!!

What's a mini-mini quilt?

It's a small quilt with a minimum perimeter of 24", and a maximum perimeter of 48". That means length + length + width + width will add up to at least 24″, but no more than 48″. You can make your mini-mini quilt any shape you like, as long as it fits within 24″-48″ perimeter. A square quilt 12" x 12" would be the maximum perimeter.

Remember how fun our mini quilt swap with Washington DC was? This will be just as great, but with quilts half the size!

Wanna participate this time around? Here's the details!

– This is a SECRET swap. When you sign up, you’ll fill out a questionnaire. When you’re assigned someone to sew for, you’ll be sent their questionnaire. This means that you’ll get something made specifically for you, taking your likes and dislikes into consideration. Awesome! Most people will be assigned a partner from the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild, though if the numbers are uneven, a few OMQG members might end up swapping with each other. The person you're sewing for will not be the same person as who's sewing for you.

- You'll be making a MODERN mini-mini quilt based on your partner's likes and dislikes. Everyone has different levels of quilting experience, but we'll be doing our best possible work. 

– Sign ups will start today, January 16, 2017, and will go to February 1, 2017. That gives you a little over two weeks to sign up.

– Sign ups will be ONLINE only.

– Partners will be assigned by February 15, 2017, and your partner's information will be emailed to you

– You’ll bring your finished mini quilt back to the April guild meeting. We'll mail all of the quilts together to Vancouver, and they'll mail all of theirs to us. Quilts will be distributed at the May guild meeting.

– Quilts should have some sort of hanger attached. this can be a sleeve, triangles in the two upper corners, whatever works best for the quilt you make.

– This is a members-only activity. supporting your guild has its perks!

Next Meeting - January 23

We wanted to start off the new year with "A few of our favorite things".   

We want to know what your favorite quilty things are...  What tools do you use the most?  Do you have any unique rulers that you want us to be aware of? What is your favorite quilt in your collection (we all have a collection of quilts laying around)?  Why are these items your favorites?  

Please bring your favorite tool, ruler, or quilt to share your favorite things!
